COLUMBUS –State Representative Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) announced the Ohio Penal Industries (OPI) operating at the Ohio Reformatory for Women will receive more than $80,000 released through the Controlling Board Monday.

The funds will be used to purchase a dye sublimation printer to be used in the OPI Flag Shop at the reformatory. This machine is a direct-to-garment printer that will enable OPI to produce larger and more intricate flags and banners to better accommodate customer demands.

“Vocational job training is a critical part of the reform process for these women,” said Richardson. “Providing state funding for this training and equipment can help reduce recidivism rates and increase the chances for a successful reintroduction into society.”

The flag shop has been in operation at the reformatory since 1926 and produces U.S., Ohio and prisoner of war flags in a variety of sizes. Through the operation, incarcerated individuals are learning a trade and obtaining skills and experience to enter the workplace.

The Ohio Controlling Board is the financial legislative oversight for capital and operating expenditures by state agencies. The next controlling board meeting is scheduled for Nov. 7.
