COLUMBUS—The House Local Government Committee began hearings on House Bill 139, legislation to codify Ohio’s existing fire hydrant use and maintenance practices, announced bill sponsor, State Representative Thomas Hall (R- Madison Twp.).

The bill will require the State Fire Marshal to adopt and enforce the State Fire Code, which outlines periodic inspections, testing, and maintenance of fire hydrant systems in Ohio.

“This legislation promotes emergency preparedness and increases public safety, ensuring peace of mind when an emergency arises,” said Hall.

Additionally, House Bill 139 will codify existing language under the Ohio Administrative Code outlining minimum inspection, testing, and maintenance standards as follows:

  • Fire hydrants must be inspected annually and after each operation. A flow test and general maintenance must be conducted annually.
  • Fire service main piping must be inspected annually. A flow test must be conducted every five years.
  • Fire service main piping strainers must be inspected and receive general maintenance after each use.

House Bill 139 awaits further consideration from the House Local Government Committee.
