Representative Patton Applauds Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit with 'American Factory' Oscar Win
On Sunday, the Oscars aired and awarded Best Documentary Feature to “American Factory” – a documentary based around an Ohio factory’s reopening by a Chinese billionaire. The film benefitted from the Ohio motion picture tax credit program that began in 2009. Since 2006, Rep. Patton has been a primary sponsor and supporter of several motion picture tax credit bills.
“When I first started working on the Motion Picture Tax Credit with my colleagues in the late 2000’s, moments like these are what we envisioned,” said Patton. “I’m proud that Ohio’s Motion Picture Tax Credit program supported the Academy Award winning production, “American Factory.” As we continue to enhance the program in order to bring a permanent production facility to Northeast Ohio, I applaud the vision and success of Steven Bognar, and Julie and Jeff Riechert.”
“American Factory” received a tax credit under the program of $119,500, which a creator of the film, Steven Bognar, indicated was quite crucial.
The credit program allows up to $40 million a year in tax breaks and refunds 30 percent of what is spent in Ohio. According to a Cleveland State University study, between 2011 and 2015, the credit has generated $22 million in tax revenues along with sustaining 1,729 jobs with a labor income impact of $70.6 million.
