COLUMBUS, OH – State Representative Riordan McClain (R-Upper Sandusky) today announced his opposition to the Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) proposed Route 23 Improvement Program in Morrow and Marion Counties, citing the significant impact the project would have on local farmers, homeowners and communities.

The proposed project includes six potential alignments connecting Route 23 to I-71. The preferred alignment would impact approximately 871 acres of agricultural land and eight homes. Across all six alternatives, agricultural impacts range from 790 to 915 acres, while residential impacts range from three to 13 homes.

“I am opposed to this project as a whole, and I will lead the opposition to it in the Ohio House. We cannot address a Delaware County congestion problem by forcing farmers and homeowners in Morrow and Marion Counties to give up their land and homes. These are working farms, family homes and livelihoods. I understand the need to address congestion along Route 23, but this is a Delaware County problem that should be solved in Delaware County,” said Rep. McClain. “We need to pursue solutions that provide relief for drivers without placing this tremendous burden on the people of Morrow and Marion Counties. I will stand with my constituents and do everything I can to oppose this project.”

McClain emphasized that he supports addressing congestion and safety concerns along Route 23 but believes any solution must respect property owners and minimize impacts on the communities surrounding the corridor.
