Reps. Baker, Ray Hold Press Conference on Priority Adoption Bill

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Rachel Baker (D-Cincinnati) and joint sponsor, Assistant Majority Whip Sharon Ray (R-Wadsworth) today held a press conference on the Adoption Modernization Act, priority legislation that modernizes Ohio’s adoption process and prioritizes the best interest of the child.

“This bill prioritizes people over burdensome processes that limit opportunities for our children,” said Rep. Baker. “All children deserve the opportunity to succeed and be supported in loving homes.”

The legislation provides financial support for expecting mothers, expedites kinship care, and clarifies Ohio law to help streamline the adoption process.

“Modernizing the adoption process is a step in the right direction for our state,” said Rep. Ray. “All children deserve the opportunity to succeed and be supported in loving homes.”

According to data published by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, there are currently almost 15,000 children in foster care statewide and 3,500 awaiting adoption.

The bill awaits consideration by the House Families and Aging Committee.
