State Representative Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Twp.) today highlighted House Resolution 219 – commemorating the Fiftieth Anniversary of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy and the lives lost, including seven Northwest Ohioans.

“The sinking of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald is one of the most haunting tragedies in our nation’s maritime history. On this fiftieth anniversary, we remember the twenty-nine brave crew members who lost their lives, including seven from right here in Northwest Ohio,” said Rep. Williams. “Their courage, sacrifice, and service to America’s shipping industry will never be forgotten. Today, we honor their memory and recommit ourselves to preserving their legacy for future generations.”

On November 10, 1975, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald tragically sank in a storm on Lake Superior with the loss of all twenty-nine crew members, seven of whom were from Northwest Ohio, including Captain Ernest McSorley of Ottawa Hills. The ship was the pride of America’s and Ohio’s maritime shipping industry, and its loss claimed the lives of several of the state’s most skilled nautical crewmen.
