Robinson, Brent Praise Governor's Veto Of Budget Provision That Would Have Limited Money For Local School Districts

State Reps. Juanita Brent (D-Cleveland) and Phil Robinson (D-Solon) today issued a joint statement applauding Gov. Mike DeWine’s veto of a provision within the state budget, House Bill 166, that would have limited the ability of certain school districts to raise operating funds through local property taxes.

Brent spoke on the House floor Wednesday about the impact the provision would have on Orange City Schools, located in her district, which would have lost 90 percent of its funding. The Northeast Ohio area lawmakers urged the governor Wednesday to veto the provision.

“The governor is right—we can’t start picking winners and losers when it comes to investing in our children’s future. We applaud the veto of this provision that would have eroded home rule authority by making it harder for local districts to raise the funds that give teachers and students the tools they need to succeed. We know that Ohio’s promise of better lives and brighter futures begins in the classroom. This veto gives more communities across Ohio the ability to invest in those futures, one student at a time.”
