Rep. Plummer Leads Effort to Enhance Safety at Downtown Bus Station Hubs

State Representative Phil Plummer (R-Dayton) applauded the passage of the Ohio House’s version of the State Operating Budget, which included an amendment championed by Rep. Plummer that aims to curb crime, enhance safety and protect students at downtown bus station hubs.

“Current policy has failed to solve this downtown bus hub problem, it is now time to act,” said Rep. Plummer. “For the safety of our students, citizens and business community, student transfers will no longer be permitted at the downtown RTA hub: just take the students home.”

The provision included in the budget bill requires school districts in the eight largest counties to ensure that student transfers on mass transit systems do not take place at central hubs.

The language also states that “Whenever a mass transit system regularly transports children to or from a school session, the mass transit system shall provide routes that ensure that such children either will not need to transfer between different buses or that the children will only need to make one transfer at a location that is not the central transfer hub for the mass transit system.”

Amended Substitute House Bill 96 now goes to the Senate for further consideration.
