COLUMBUS– State Reps. Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) and Michele Grim (D- Toledo) today introduced legislation that would ban the possession and sale of all bump stocks for personal use in Ohio.

“Bump stocks are not necessary for self-defense, hunting, or any other legal purpose. In fact, they help circumvent laws regulating fully automatic firearms by enabling rapid fire. We must reimplement the previous administration's prohibition and close this dangerous loophole. I look forward to working with Rep. Grim to make Ohio the 17th state to ban bump stocks,” said Rep. Thomas.

This legislation will make the illegal sale or possession of a bump fire stock a 4th degree felony.

“Ohioans and Americans across our country understand why bump stocks are not necessary. They are needlessly dangerous additions to firearms. I’m proud to stand with Representative Thomas and continue to introduce common-sense gun legislation that will save lives across our state,” said Rep. Grim.

In the aftermath of the Las Vegas shooting and at the request of President Trump, the bump stock was banned under federal law in 2018. This prohibition was in place for five years until the Supreme Court vacated the ban and returned regulation of bump stocks to the states. Currently, 16 states plus Washington, D.C. bar bump stock ownership.

The legislation awaits a bill number and assignment to a House Committee.
