Reps. Grim, Baker Announce Rideshare Sexual Assault Prevention Act

COLUMBUS – State Reps. Michele Grim (D-Toledo) and Rachel Baker (D-Cincinnati) today introduced the Rideshare Sexual Assault Prevention Act. This legislation will establish a comprehensive set of regulations for Transportation Network Companies (TNCs).

“Current law leaves too many gaps that put Ohioans at risk. Anyone using a rideshare service deserves to know that every reasonable step has been taken to protect their safety. Sexual assault involving rideshare platforms is a serious concern, and it's our responsibility as lawmakers to close these gaps and ensure transportation network companies are held to stronger safety standards,” said Rep. Grim.

“Ohioans should never have to wonder whether the person picking them up has been properly vetted. This bill puts real accountability measures in place including regular background checks, faster response to complaints, and transparency requirements so that safety isn't left to chance. I'm proud to co-sponsor this legislation and stand with Ohioans who deserve safer rides,” said Rep. Baker.

The Rideshare Sexual Assault Prevention Act would establish the following protections:

• A background check must be completed for a driver before being authorized to provide services, and every 6 months during their employment
• TNCs must create a deactivation and suspension policy to initiate a review of a driver for deactivation within 7 business days if the TNC is notified through a complaint filed with the TNC or the Public Utilities Commission
• TNCs must provide data surrounding customer reports of sexual assault, harassment, imposter drivers, etc. to the Public Utilities Commission
• Prohibits TNCs from deleting or falsifying driver ratings/reviews

The Rideshare Sexual Assault Prevention Act awaits a bill number and committee assignment.
