COLUMBUS — State Reps. Crystal Lett (D-Columbus) and Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland) today introduced a bipartisan bill aimed to prevent drink spiking incidents and inform law enforcement of trends and data related to the issue. Drink spiking is the practice of putting an illicit substance in someone’s drink without their knowledge and usually co-occurs with other crimes such as sexual violence and theft.

“This legislation seeks not only to raise awareness about the risks associated with drink spiking, but also to enhance safety in our communities. When drink spiking occurs, it puts individuals at risk for human trafficking, sexual assault, and violence. This bill will ensure more Ohioans can enjoy socializing without fear of being victimized,” said Rep. Lett.

“By providing drink testing strips, this bill will not only increase public safety but protect the health and wellbeing of Ohioans and support our businesses. This is a commonsense measure,” said Rep. Schmidt.

It is estimated that 90% of drink spiking incidents go unreported. This bill will work to empower patrons and bar staff, by adding an extra layer of safety and awareness.

This bill will:

  • Allow bars to opt in and access drink testing products on site for their patrons;
  • Supply test strips with the ability to detect at least ten controlled substances; and
  • Authorizes Ohio Liquor Control to establish an oversight program for positive test strips.
