Rep. McNally, Youngstown Mayor Tito Brown Announce $5K in Grant Funding for 'Layers of Legacy' Mural from America-250
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) today announced $5,000 in grant funding from the America 250-Ohio Commission for the Layers of Legacy: Preserving Youngstown’s Hidden History project. The Layers of Legacy project will celebrate Youngstown’s rich and diverse history through a vibrant public mural that brings to life untold and underrepresented stories.
“I’m delighted our district’s history is being given a spotlight. Murals like this serve to remind us just how far we’ve come as a community, and as a country. I am excited to see the finished product and excited for younger generations to learn about Youngstown history,” said Rep. McNally.
Youngstown has long been a melting pot, shaped by generations of immigrants and migrants drawn by opportunity. These individuals enriched the city with their unique cultures, religions, and languages, forming the foundation of its working-class identity. The mural will serve as a metaphorical mosaic of narratives and experiences, highlighting the shared journeys and collective resilience of the people who built this community. By incorporating input and ideas from the community, the mural's themes will be shaped by the voices of those who call Youngstown home. It will tell a series of lesser-known stories from Youngstown's past, ensuring all viewers feel represented and connected to our shared history.
“Our city is filled with reminders of the important role our history has played in shaping the nation and is a source of pride that helps define what it means to be from Youngstown,” said Youngstown Mayor Jamael Tito Brown. “The mural project will serve as a great way to showcase our legacy and enshrine it for future generations.”
The funding is part of the third and final round of grants supporting local America-250 activities across the state. To learn more about the America 250-Ohio Commission’s grants program visit here.
