COLUMBUS – State Rep. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) today announced the Controlling Board approval of $245,520 from the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) for the Ohio State Penitentiary (OSP) located in Youngstown to contract professional design services on the Switchgear Elevator Project.

“How we maintain the safety of those working and incarcerated here in Ohio says a great deal about our values and humanity,” said Rep. McNally. “I’ll continue supporting efforts to ensure our facilities remain safe for all those directly impacted by them”

A locally administered project that is currently in the design phase, the OSP’s Switchgear Elevator Project will consist of at least the replacement of six elevators and associated systems, installation of a new switchgear, and subsequent testing, permitting, and training for safety and maintenance purposes. Opened in 1998 and housing approximately 485 incarcerated individuals, the current switch gear and elevators at the high security, six-story correction facility operated by ODRC are outdated, resulting in the dwindling availability or obsoletion of compatible replacement parts for a switchgear and elevators that are vital to the daily operations and safety of the institution.

The $245,520 in capital funds from the General Building Renovation line item in FY 2025 will be used as follows:

  • $ 224,520.00 to Domokur & Associates LLC, of Copley, Ohio in Summit County for Professional Design Services
  • $ 21,000.00 to OFCC for Local Administration Fees
