Rep. McNally Announces $200K in Grants for Mahoning County Jail for Opioid Remediation
COLUMBUS — State Rep. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) today announced that the Ohio Attorney General’s Office awarded $200K in Opioid Remediation Grants to the Mahoning County Jail. These grants are used to fight opioid addiction for those who are incarcerated.
In the past four years, at least 219 people have died in Ohio jails. The second leading cause of death was opioid and substance abuse. There is a need for inmate treatment and recovery services. These grants are used to create and expand opioid remediation programming that help inmates through detox and recovery.
“Ohio was hit hard by the opioid crisis. Many people have had their lives ruined by addiction. This is an opportunity to use the money from the Purdue Pharma settlement to right some wrongs and get people the help that they need,” said Rep. McNally, “I believe that recovery is a cornerstone to reentering society. It is important that we give people the resources that they need, so that they can get back on their feet.”
This grant opportunity is funded by the $60M opioid settlement that Ohio won against Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family for their policies that fueled the opioid crisis. Ohio was deeply affected by this crisis and had some of the highest overdose rates in the country between 2014-2016.
