Ohio House Passes Healthy Cardiac Monitoring Act

COLUMBUS— State Representative Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland) is pleased to announce that the Ohio House of Representatives today passed the Healthy Cardiac Monitoring Act, legislation designed to protect student-athletes at high risk of cardiac events.

House Bill 437 will ensure that student athletes are screened for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and other conditions when they receive their required physical. If a student meets the criteria, they will be subject to additional screenings.

“As a coach, my biggest fear is a runner having a cardiac event,” said Schmidt. “These screenings will enable our athletes to fully understand the reality they may face when participating in high intensity sports.” 

Additionally, the legislation will require advanced registered nurses, physicians, or physician assistants that perform these examinations to complete a childhood cardiac screening professional development module once every four years, to ensure even greater protection.

The Healthy Cardiac Monitoring Act now awaits consideration by the Ohio Senate.
