Rep. Humphrey Condemns Recent Gun Violence Involving 2-Year-Old Victim, Urges for Commonsense Gun Legislation
COLUMBUS - State Rep. Latyna M. Humphrey (D-Columbus) today spoke out against a recent tragic shooting incident in Southeast Columbus, where a 2-year-old child was critically injured. The incident, which occurred on Carlton Avenue, led to the young victim being taken to Children’s Hospital in critical condition. This shooting underscores the urgent need for comprehensive and commonsense gun policies.
“Gun violence continues to plague our communities, causing unnecessary loss and trauma,” said Rep. Humphrey. “My heart goes out to the young victim and their family during this incredibly difficult time. No child, no family, should have to experience such a tragedy.”
Rep. Humphrey calls upon the legislature to act swiftly and decisively to implement measures that can prevent such tragedies in the future.
“During the upcoming lame-duck season, we must prioritize the safety of our citizens by enacting sensible gun control laws. This includes comprehensive background checks, closing loopholes that allow dangerous individuals to obtain firearms, and promoting responsible gun ownership,” said Rep. Humphrey.
At the Ohio Gun Violence Prevention Summit in February 2024, the Democratic caucus introduced five firearm safety bills aimed at reducing gun violence in the state. These bills focus on universal background checks, red flag laws, safe storage requirements, and increasing penalties for straw purchases. Rep. Humphrey strongly supports these initiatives and urges bipartisan cooperation to pass these critical pieces of legislation.
Additionally, in February of last year, Rep. Humphrey introduced House Bill 62, which limits the locations where a person has no duty to retreat before using force in self-defense. This bill also removes the prohibition against considering the possibility of retreat when determining self-defense, reinstating the law as it was prior to April 2021.
“This is not about politics; our communities deserve to live without fear of gun violence. It is our duty as legislators to take meaningful action now,” Rep. Humphrey emphasized.
Rep. Humphrey remains committed to advocating for policies that will reduce gun violence and improve public safety.
