State Representatives Kevin Ritter (R-Marietta) today announced that Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Partnership (HAPCAP) will receive $2 million from the Ohio Department of Development to make improvements at the Sunset Shelter Project in Athens.

“I’m glad to see grant funding going towards this very special, local project,” said Rep. Ritter. “It will give a boost to the great work that’s happening there to give folks a helping hand when they need it most.”

As recently announced, HAPCAP will receive $2 million to create an additional 10 units at the site of its 135 Columbus Road shelter in Athens—bringing the total number of units available to 30, and an expected 48 beds. Additionally, this funding will support other site improvements such as creating laundry and community facilities within the existing building, adding playground equipment, and a safe, on-site parking lot with security lighting.

Funding is provided through the HOME American Rescue Plan (HOME-ARP) Non-Congregate Shelter program, which provides a safe and private living environment for people experiencing homelessness by supporting the creation and expansion of non-congregate shelters across Ohio.

Development recently announced $4 million to help combat homelessness across Ohio. Funding will support the creation of 31 units of non-congregate shelter with 47 total beds. According to the press release, these new units will provide much-needed support for individuals and families who are looking for an alternative to traditional shelter settings. Non-congregate shelters offer separate sleeping spaces and bathroom facilities, ensuring increased privacy for residents.
