CINCINNATI —Hamilton County Democrats have unveiled a package of bills aimed at protecting communities from ICE tactics, following recent incidents in Minnesota where two U.S. citizens were killed.

State lawmakers emphasized the importance of transparency, safety and due process, asserting that what has occurred in other states should not happen in Ohio.

Democratic lawmakers gathered on the steps of the Hamilton County Courthouse to introduce eight bills focused on community and police protection.

"Law enforcement should be known to the community. We cannot tolerate secret police forces tasked with carrying out the president's anti-immigration policies," said State Rep. Karen Brownlee.

One bill, proposed by Rep. Karen Brownlee and Rep. Cecil Thomas, would require law enforcement operating in Ohio to show identification and ban face coverings used to conceal identity. Lawmakers argue that masked agents pose a risk to everyone.

"If you are expected to come into the state of Ohio, you will be expected to work with our law enforcement officers and that you will work under our rules, not yours," said Thomas.

Another bill aims to establish minimum standards for detention facilities, including provisions for food, temperature and the ability to make phone calls. Lawmakers cite alleged conditions in Butler County as a warning sign.

"If folks break the law, they should be held accountable, but it should be done so in humanity and with dignity, and bring a safe process that everyone deserves," said Rep. Ashley Bryant Bailey of District 26.

The proposed bills may face challenges in the Republican-controlled statehouse, but supporters stress the importance of protecting both communities and law enforcement.
