COLUMBUS - State Reps. Juanita O. Brent (D-Cleveland) and Jamie Callender (R-Concord) today released a statement on House Bill (HB) 178, the C.R.OW.N. (Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) Act,which passed Tuesday out of the House Civil Justice Committee by a 9-3 vote.
“The C.R.O.W.N Act is a reflection of my life and many others who look like me dealing with hair discrimination,” said Rep. Brent. “Discrimination of natural hair textures is still legal in Ohio. Passing the C.R.O.W.N Act will improve our economy and educational experience for everyone in Ohio.”
“With all of the issues facing students today, having to worry about your natural hair should not be one of them,” said Rep. Callender. “I am honored to be able to stand alongside Representative Brent as she continues her years-long effort to advocate for student’s right to wear their natural hair.”
The bill now awaits a vote on the House floor.
