COLUMBUS— State Rep. Juanita Brent (D-Cleveland) released a statement today after spending the afternoon touring Trichomb Crops Farm, an Ohio hemp farm. In July of 2019, Senate Bill (SB) 57 was signed into law, effectively calling for both the decriminalization of hemp and the licensure of hemp cultivation. This legislation followed the legalization of hemp in 40 other states. As an advocate of hemp cultivation and production, Rep. Brent believes that Ohio largely stands to benefit from hemp production.

“Hemp is one of the connecting pieces that is needed to make the state of Ohio more sustainable. Not only is hemp used to create biodegradable bags and straws, but the legalization of the crop is the key first step in legalizing CBD usage within the state. The Trichomb Farm has played a substantial role in advocating for the use of hemp. Ohio needs to ensure farmers have access to timely inspections of hemp crops, and the number of plants needed for hemp licensure must be reduced. Eliminating these restrictions will increase the number of individuals who are able to grow and cultivate hemp. SB 57 was only the first step, and many more steps must take place to expand hemp within Ohio,” said Rep. Brent.

Hemp fibers are used in textiles, foods, clothing, paper and construction amongst other industries. Ohio farmers are now able to expand their crop cultivation to include hemp and enhance their operations. This will provide job creation while simultaneously stimulating the state agricultural industry. Beneficially, the crop is environmentally friendly and is well suited to grow in a variety of soil types and climates. As a biodegradable crop, it can be recycled and removes substantial amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere per each acre planted.
