Rep. Brent speaks out against last minute amendment to SB 187

State Representative Juanita Brent (D-Cleveland) released the subsequent statement following the House’s passage of Senate Bill 187, which allows intercollegiate athletes to earn compensation for their names, images, and likeness. Republicans offered Amendment 1594, originally House Bill 61, which prohibits transgender student athletes from competing in the conferences and events of their gender identity. 

“This amendment makes Ohio a haven for hate,” said Rep. Brent. “If the General Assembly wants to protect women, we need to turn our attention to equal pay for equal work, paid family leave, a wage discrimination hotline, and reproductive justice. This is the work that needs to be done to protect women in Ohio, not this discriminatory amendment.”
