COLUMBUS– State Rep. Juanita Brent (D-Cleveland) issued a statement today on the 7th anniversary of Tamir Rice’s death. Tamir Rice was just 12 years old when he was killed in Cleveland, Ohio in 2014 by a white police officer because he had a toy gun in a park.
“There is a continuous double standard in the criminal justice system when it comes to gun laws in reference to people of color,” said Rep. Brent. “Kyle Rittenhouse was able to claim self-defense and get acquitted for murder, but when those same gun laws were applied to Tamir Rice, he was senselessly murdered. This shows that race is still a factor in how people are treated in the criminal justice system.”
