COLUMBUS - State Rep. Juanita O. Brent (D-Cleveland) Wednesday released a statement on House Bill (HB) 178, the C.R.OW.N. Act being favorable passed on the House floor with a (83-7) vote.

“Your hair does not change your competence; your hair shouldn’t change your worth," said Rep. Brent. “The C.R.O.W.N. act is a step towards accepting and celebrating cultural expression. Black people should not have to fight for the privilege to wear their hair in its natural state, when for everyone else, it is a right.”

The C.R.O.W.N Act creates protections against hair discrimination in public K-12 schools and public and private preschools. HB 178 also provides victims of hair discrimination the right to sue the assailant.

The bill now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
