State Representative Juanita Brent (D-Cleveland) today announced that Senate Bill 26, legislation that will authorize a state income tax deduction for teacher out-of-pocket expenses for professional development and classroom supplies, has passed the Ohio House of Representatives unanimously. Senate Bill 26 will also exempt feminine hygiene products from sales and use tax.

“The passage of Senate Bill 26 is a tremendous victory for teachers and women across the state; two groups that have long been undervalued and underappreciated,” said State Rep. Brent. We, as legislators, work for you and if we keep passing good legislation that makes the lives of Ohioans easier, then we are doing our jobs and keeping our Ohio Promise.”

The bill authorizes Ohio teachers to deduct up to $250 for expenses and would apply for the following: books, supplies, computers and other equipment, supplementary materials used in the classroom, and professional development courses related to the teacher’s curriculum or students.

After passing the House, the bill moves to the Senate for approval before heading to the governor to be signed into law.
