Reps. Williams, Lawson-Rowe's House Bill 166 to Establish Harriet Tubman Day Passes Ohio House
COLUMBUS, OH – The Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 166, a historic measure that designates March 10th as Harriet Tubman Day in Ohio, Wednesday, announced State Representative Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Township).
The bill, which is joint-sponsored by Representative Meredith Lawson-Rowe (D-Reynoldsburg), honors the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman, an American icon whose tireless fight for freedom, justice, and equality changed the course of U.S. history.
“Harriet Tubman’s courage, sacrifice, and leadership deserve permanent recognition,” said Williams. “By passing H.B. 166, we ensure that her contributions are never forgotten and that future generations understand the significance of her work.”
Tubman, born into slavery in 1822, escaped in 1849 and went on to lead dozens of enslaved individuals to freedom through the Underground Railroad. She also played a critical role in the abolitionist movement, supported the Union during the Civil War as a nurse and scout, and later became a strong advocate for women’s suffrage.
The bill, originally introduced on the 112th anniversary of Tubman's death, now heads to the Senate for a vote.
