State Representative Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Twp.) today held a press conference where he introduced the Tithing Protection Act – legislation that would allow a personal income tax deduction for Ohioans who make certain donations to churches.

“The government should not be taxing what belongs to God,” said Rep. Williams. “For generations, Ohio families have faithfully tithed to their churches, supporting ministries that feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and lift up our communities. The Tithing Protection Act recognizes that these gifts are sacred, not taxable income, and ensures Ohio law reflects that truth.”

If passed, the Tithing Protection Act would amend section 5747.01 of the Ohio Revised Code, ensuring that Ohio taxpayers who itemize deductions on their federal return may also deduct qualifying charitable contributions made to a church or church association from their Ohio taxable income.

This bill awaits a number and committee assignment. To watch the full press conference, click here.
