COLUMBUS – State Representative Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Twp.) is pleased to announce that the Ohio House voted yesterday to concur on Am. House Bill 57 – legislation to maintain and the track the usage of an overdose reversal drug, commonly known as NARCAN, in Ohio schools.

“This legislation ensures that if a school chooses to keep overdose reversal drugs on hand, there is accountability, transparency, and a clear plan in place,” said Rep. Williams. “Our goal is simple: to save lives while making sure parents are informed and schools are equipped to respond responsibly. By requiring reporting and tracking, we’re not only addressing emergencies but also identifying larger patterns that need attention in order to keep our kids safe.”

This legislation will require a school that elects to keep a supply of overdose reversal drugs to create a policy for the supply’s maintenance and use. Current law allows schools to purchase, possess, distribute and dispense overdose reversal drugs. These drugs must be in their original packaging, include the manufacturer’s instructions and be stored according to the manufacturer’s instructions for a school to legally administer the drug.

The bill will also require a superintendent to report the usage of an overdose reversal drug on school property to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce and the parents of the student the drug was administered to as soon as practical.  If a persistent pattern of overdose occurs, a superintendent is required to notify the parent or guardian of ever enrolled student of the high level of overdoses.

House Bill 57 now goes to the Governor for his signature.
