Rep. Joe Miller Introduces Bill to Honor and Remember Gold Star Families
COLUMBUS– State Rep. Joe Miller (D-Lorain) has dropped legislation to designate the Honor and Remember flag as a symbol of Ohio’s commitment to honoring and remembering our fallen service members and their families.
The bill was first introduced during the 133rd GA and passed unanimously out of the House Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Committee. It failed to make it to the House floor for a vote before the end of the GA. In the 134th GA, the bill passed unanimously out of the House Government Oversight Committee, and was voted out of the House 96-0, where it failed to get a hearing in the Senate Veterans and Public Safety Committee.
“The Honor and Remember flag commemorates the sacrifice made by America’s fallen soldiers and their families. It encompasses all conflicts going back to the American Revolution and includes those who died in the line of duty, as well as those who lost their lives in connection with their service,” said Rep. Joe Miller. “This bill’s purpose is giving families another way to honor their loved ones and allowing members of the public to show their support.”
This legislation is permissive and would:
- Allow for public buildings to fly the Honor and Remember flag during normal business hours and at any location during a military memorial service.
- Allow the Statehouse to have a choice to fly the Honor and Remember flag on Memorial Day.
The legislation is awaiting a bill number.
