Legislation to Limit Tax Penalties Passes in House Committee
COLUMBUS – Earlier this week, The House Ways and Means Committee passed House Bill 105, legislation that would place limits on municipal income tax late filing penalties, announced State Representative Jim Thomas (R-Jackson Twp.).
House Bill 105 is Thomas’ first sponsored piece of legislation voted out of committee.
“I appreciate Chairman Roemer and members of the committee recognizing the importance of this bill,” Thomas said. “By implementing a flat fee on late filing penalties for municipal taxes, we are helping Ohioans and their families avoid excessive fees.”
Under current law, taxpayers can be charged up to $150 in municipal income tax penalties. House Bill 105 would place a flat fee on late filing penalties of $25 for failure to timely file each return, regardless of the liability. The proposed legislation would also cut down on the burdensome late return notices from a municipal tax administrator or commissioner.
The measure now moves to the House floor for further consideration.
