COLUMBUS—Members from the Ohio House and Senate today held a press conference on legislation to address increases in property taxes throughout many Ohio counties, said State Rep. Jennifer Gross (R-West Chester).

House Bill 187 and Senate Bill 153 will help Ohioans remain in their homes by modifying the procedures used by the Tax Commissioner to conduct property tax sales assessment ratio studies to produce fair property valuations. More specifically, these bills will have the Commissioner work alongside local elected officials and weigh the past three years of a county’s property values in order to determine property tax.

“I am in favor of both bills, which will truly relieve the residents of District 45 from the burden of rising property taxes,” said Rep. Gross. "In Butler County, our commissioners and legislators are a strong team. This legislation will place into statute the people's voice in the property tax process rather than allowing the excessive historic control by an unelected bureaucrat."

Butler County is one of many Ohio counties facing property tax increases because of high property valuations.

House Bill 187 awaits a vote on the House floor. Senate Bill 153 awaits consideration by the Senate Ways and Means Committee.
