Gross Votes to Protect Ohio's Constitution
COLUMBUS—The Ohio House of Representatives recently passed Senate Joint Resolution 2, the Ohio Constitutional Protection Amendment, announced State Rep. Jennifer Gross (R-West Chester).
The resolution establishes a special election to bring the amendment before voters on August 8, 2023. If passed by voters, the proposed amendment to Ohio’s Constitution would require any future constitutional amendments to be approved by at least 60% of the vote total, an increase from the current threshold of 50% plus one vote.
“Our constitution is worth protecting,” said Gross. “This amendment will ensure changes to our great state’s foundation have support from Ohioans of different ages, races, socioeconomic status, upbringings, and more.”
The amendment will ensure constitutional amendments have a diverse and representative population of Ohioans in support before appearing on a ballot.
Citizens will still be able to propose constitutional amendments and make citizen-led changes to the Ohio Revised Code.
