Ohio Governor Signs Bill to Allow Virtual Public Meetings
COLUMBUS—Legislation to allow certain public bodies to meet virtually was recently signed into law, announced bill sponsor, State Rep. Jim Hoops (R-Napoleon). Hoops sponsored House Bill 257 alongside State Rep. Thad Claggett (R-Newark).
The bill aims to promote member and public participation in public meetings by allowing certain public bodies to meet virtually by means of teleconference, video conference, or any other similar electronic technology.
“By allowing virtual meetings, I’m confident we will see a direct increase in public participation and attendance of board members,” said Hoops. “When used correctly and intentionally, technology is a helpful tool.”
Public bodies who opt to hold a virtual meeting, will be required to adopt a policy before the meeting takes place. The bill outlines what the policy is required to include.
House Bill 257 will take effect on April 8, 2025.
