COLUMBUS – State Rep. Ismail Mohamed (D-Columbus) today was pleased to see his House Bill (HB) 247, legislation designating June 20th as “World Refugee Day,” was signed by Governor DeWine Wednesday as part of an amendment to Senate Bill (SB) 210.

“I am proud that Ohio is taking this important step to honor the resilience of refugees,” said Rep. Mohamed. “World Refugee Day is not just a day to remember their hardships, but to celebrate their strength and the rich diversity they bring to our communities. This law represents a commitment to support and uplift those who have been displaced by conflict and persecution. It’s an acknowledgment that refugees don’t just rebuild their own lives, but also contribute immeasurably to the social fabric of our state.”

HB 247 honors refugees around the globe and celebrates the strengths and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home countries to escape conflict or persecution. The new law reinforces Ohio’s commitment to being a welcoming and inclusive state for people from all walks of life, regardless of their background or country of origin.
