COLUMBUS - State Rep. Ismail Mohamed (D-Columbus) yesterday hosted the second annual Iftar at the Statehouse. The dinner event celebrated the fast-breaking evening meal, called iftar, during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

“It is exciting to see us grow the tradition of Iftar at the Statehouse and continue to welcome Ohioans of all backgrounds to break bread together in the place where they are represented,” said Rep. Mohamed. “This Ramadan is unique, as we celebrate with heavy hearts and thoughts of those not with us. I am grateful to everyone who joined in thoughtful reflection of shared interfaith values and celebration of the strength of community amidst ongoing global conflict and division.”

The event welcomed over 200 people to the Ohio Statehouse and highlighted the importance of unity amidst ongoing global issues. Guests at the Iftar were from all religious backgrounds, and featured interfaith speakers, community leaders, and representatives from the House Democratic Leadership team, Columbus City Council, and the Representative of Somalia to the United Nations.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is a sacred time of reflection, community, charity, and faith for Muslims across the world. During the month long celebration, the majority of Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset and traditionally break their fasts together at iftar.
