Rep. Mohamed Announces $22M for Ohio Access to Justice and Legal Aid
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Ismail Mohamed (D-Columbus) today announced that the Controlling Board has approved funding for the Ohio Access to Justice Foundation. The Ohio Access to Justice Foundation funds legal aid throughout the state of Ohio and enhances the delivery of civil legal services to people in need of indigent defense.
“Legal aid and providers of legal assistance to low-income Ohioans play an essential role in upholding our sixth amendment commitment and making Ohio more equitable” said Rep. Mohamed. “The funding released today is vital in allowing legal aid organizations to continue to serve communities across our state.”
Legal aid helps low-income Ohioans who need legal assistance with civil matters that threaten their ability to live safe, stable, and productive lives. Ohio's legal aid returns $2.90 for every dollar invested by, among other things, helping Ohio's veterans access the benefits they earned from their service; helping Ohioans validate their driver's licenses and seal and expunge old records so that they can get better jobs; and, helping victims of domestic violence obtain protection orders to protect themselves and their children and to go on to live securely and independently.
