Rep. Mohamed Announces $1M for New Residential Care Treatment Facility in District
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Ismail Mohamed (D-Columbus) today announced that the Controlling Board approved funding for the purchase of land for a new residential care treatment facility near Old North, Columbus. The new residential care center will transform an existing property into the group home.
“Mental health challenges and addiction reach across typical barriers and can impact anyone in our community,” said Rep. Mohamed. “It is important that we refurbish and re-establish commitment to the facilities and programs that already exist in our area and provide quality opportunities for residential care.”
New Housing Ohio’s Melissa’s House Project is named after Elaine and Nate Goldberg’s nonprofit founded to provide mental health care in honor of their daughter.
Ohio-based nonprofit New Housing Ohio Inc. has been brought in to handle daily operations and management of Melissa’s House. They currently operate numerous homes across Ohio that serve individuals with mental illness or developmental disabilities. The Alcohol, Drug, and Mental Health Board of Franklin County has also aided with the project, working with Ohio MHAS and NAMI Ohio to help process the purchase of Melissa’s House. Additionally, Columbus City Council and the University Area Commission each unanimously approved zoning adjustments necessary to make Melissa’s House possible.
