Rep. Ismail Mohamed Condemns Recent Comments by President Trump Targeting Somali Communities

COLUMBUS — State Rep. Ismail Mohamed (D-Columbus) today issued a statement today in response to President Donald Trump’s recent remarks targeting Somali immigrants. The remarks have caused deep concern across Ohio, which has the second largest Somali population in the country.
“As a state and as a nation, we must do better,” said Rep. Mohamed. “Although America wasn’t always welcoming to new arrivals over the generations, we aspired to create laws and mend hearts and minds into accepting our unique founding principle and shared values. We are called upon again to call out hate and division.”
Rep. Mohamed, the first Somali American elected to the Ohio House, emphasized that the president’s rhetoric does not represent the values of a state built and strengthened by generations of immigrants. He noted that Somali families play an active role in Ohio’s growth, contributing to the workforce, local economies, and communities.
Rep. Mohamed emphasized that rhetoric singling out an entire community is dangerous and deepens divides at a time when unity is urgently needed.
“I will continue working with legislative colleagues, community leaders, and advocacy organizations to ensure Ohio remains a safe, welcoming home for all residents,” concluded Rep. Mohamed.
