Manning Recognizes Elyria High School Runner for Historic Accomplishment
COLUMBUS— State Representative Gayle Manning (R-Avon) and State Senator Nathan Manning (R-North Ridgeville) recently recognized the historic accomplishments of Elyria High School senior Mateo Medina winning the sprinting "triple crown" of the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter events at this year's State Finals.
“We are excited to have such a talented athlete in our district and are impressed with all his hard work and success," Representative Manning said. "I am looking forward to seeing how he continues to grow and excel in his collegiate career and beyond.”
Medina is the 16th athlete to ever achieve the sprinting "triple crown" in Ohio. His final time in the 400-meter ranked sixth in the nation and was the third fastest in state history. Mateo’s points alone beat runner-up Wayne High School by one point, securing the Division I State title for Elyria. He is the fifth athlete, and the first since 1998, to clinch the title by himself.
Medina recently competed in the New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia, where he was the runner-up in the 400-meter. He was recognized as an All-American in the 100, 200 and 400 this season.
Medina will continue his running career at Arizona State University this fall.
