Republican Power Grab Prioritizes Discrimination, Trampling Workers' Rights and Censorship, Over Freedoms and Economic Growth
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Desiree Tims (D-City) today responded to the House passage of Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Higher Education Destruction Act:
“This bill is a direct attack on free speech, academic freedom, and the future of higher education in Ohio. The First Amendment guarantees the right to open discourse, yet SB 1 silences diverse perspectives and censors discussions that challenge the status quo. Politicians should not have the power to dictate what students can learn or what professors can teach. At a time when Ohio should be investing in innovation and opportunity, this bill does the opposite—it weakens our institutions and drives talent away. Ohioans deserve policies that expand access to education, not government overreach that stifles it.” said Rep. Tims
Rather than strengthening Ohio’s higher education system, SB 1 imposes unnecessary government interference that will make it harder for students to access a high-quality education and compete in an evolving job market. Rep. Tims remains committed to fighting for policies that empower students, support educators, and ensure Ohio remains a place where innovation and opportunity thrive.
