Rep. Tims Condemns Suggested End of Temporary Protected Status for Haitians

COLUMBUS — Asst. Minority Whip Desiree Tims (D-Dayton) today condemned the Trump administration’s goal of ending the temporary protected status for Haitians living in the United States. Although the deportations have been temporarily blocked by a federal judge, the legal status of Springfield’s 15K Haitians remains unstable as the community braces for a potential ICE raid.
“This is about both protecting human life and the value Haitian immigrants add to Springfield’s community,” said Rep Tims. “Many Haitians make up Springfield’s working families who have completely revitalized Springfield’s economy and neighborhoods. Now, they are afraid to go to work or send their kids to school.”
Prior to the influx of Haitian migrants, Springfield was one of the fastest shrinking cities in the country. Many Haitian TPS holders also work in direct-care roles, often with seniors, in an already weakened healthcare system. If these deportations take place, it will decimate a skilled and experienced workforce, destabilize Springfield’s economy, and significantly shrink the city’s population.
“I will do everything necessary to restore the dignity of Springfield’s Haitian population. ICE does not belong in Springfield, and Springfield’s hard-working families do not deserve ICE’s harassment,” added Rep. Tims.
