COLUMBUS—State Representatives Meredith Craig (R-Smithville) and David Thomas (R-Jefferson) today introduced legislation that would allow nonprofit organizations to sell raffle tickets online, a fundraising method that has been widely used for years.

Many nonprofits across Ohio, including police and fire departments, have long relied on raffles as a primary fundraising tool. However, recent cease-and-desist letters from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office have halted online ticket sales. This new legislation seeks to officially legalize the practice, allowing organizations to continue reaching supporters both locally and nationwide.

“Raffles have proven to be a great way for communities to come together in support of a cause,” said Craig. “Legalizing the online sale of raffle tickets will ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate, no matter the location.”

This legislation would also be helpful in part of a larger effort to expand the funding tools available to nonprofit organizations. As the state explores ways to reduce the property tax burden on residents, providing communities with more opportunities to support themselves would strengthen local resilience and benefit Ohio for years to come.

“Money raised for these essential services that does not come from local taxpayers is a win-win for everyone,” said Thomas. “I apologize to those entities who had their fundraising disrupted by this legal interpretation and hope to get the organizations back to bringing in essential dollars soon.”

The bill awaits a number and a committee assignment.
