Richmond Heights closer to new salt bin

Richmond Heights’ vision of a new service center is now one step closer.

Thanks to a recent Capital Appropriations bill that was passed by the Ohio State House, Richmond Heights will be receiving $450,000 in state funding for a new salt bin.

The new location of the Service Department, which will be rebuilt along with the new salt bin, is yet to be determined. Mayor Kim Thomas said that the city is reviewing locations. CT Consultants is conducting land surveys and will be contractors doing the majority of the planning, she said.

“Due to the years of lack of maintenance on our service garage, it is in total disrepair,” Thomas wrote in a statement. “We have hired a CT Consultant, which is a national company, to assist with many of the larger projects. They have started designing many of the much-needed capital improvement projects. They have also been instrumental in helping us secure funding.

“We currently applied for $30 million through Senator Sherrod Brown’s office, which is currently under review by the Senate Appropriation Committee on Rebuild a new service garage facility. We are excited about the transformation of our city.”

Daniel Troy, state representative for House District 23, said he plans to seek additional funding if reelected. He told council that he has worked with other cities in the past for similar projects and hopes to see their new service center completed soon.

“I know it’s 90 degrees out and you don’t want to talk about road salt,” Troy said. “But obviously we know it’s a necessary evil in Northeast Ohio, so I’m just happy to be able to do this.

“I know you folks will put it to good use, and again, I know the city is always in need of certain things. I know the mayor has talked to me about a community park. We have another capital bill in 2026, so hopefully if I’m still representing you, and that’s up to the folks in November, I will certainly attempt to get some additional dollars for the City of Richmond Heights.”
