Rep. Isaacsohn Celebrates New Law Protecting Children from Being Listed on Eviction Notices

COLUMBUS - State Rep. Dani Isaacsohn (D-Cincinnati) today commended the signing of Senate Bill (SB) 237, enacting the Uniform Public Expression Protection Act. This bill, sponsored by Senator Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green) and Senator Nathan Manning (R-North Ridgeville), protects individuals from lawsuits concerning their protected speech, clarifies the jurisdiction of small claims court, and prohibits eviction filings from listing minors as defendants.

Rep. Isaacsohn authored the amendment preventing children from being listed on eviction filings into this bill, noting the injustice of minors being punished with eviction records.

“Eviction filings can follow you for life,” said Rep. Isaacsohn. “It is an outrageous practice to list the names of children on eviction filings, and now the law in Ohio is doing the right thing: preventing that kind of malicious behavior from taking place. We have to do more to protect renters in Ohio, and this is a small step in the right direction.”

Last week, Gov. Mike DeWine signed SB 237 into law, along with many other bills to round out the 135th General Assembly.
