Swearingen Lauds $12 Million in Great Lakes Funding
State Rep. D.J. Swearingen (R-Huron) announces more than $12 million in Great Lakes grants that will be used to help reduce the amount of debris that gets put into Lake Erie. Swearingen applauded the initiative.
“Restoration and cleanliness of Lake Erie is very crucial for the people of the 89th district,” said Swearingen. “I’m happy to see the announcement of these critical funds that will help support the safety and health of those in or around our great lake.”
Earlier today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced the large funding allocation. Specifically, the funding includes a $414,000 Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) Trash Free Waters grant to the city of Toledo. The appropriation will allow the city to install trash collection devices on shorelines of rivers that connect to Lake Erie.
It is expected that with the addition of the trash-trapping devices, thousands of pounds of trash will be collected each year, which will help improve areas of waterways and land.
