State Representative Swearingen Applauds Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Grants
COLUMBUS – State Representative D.J. Swearingen (R-Huron) today commended the announcement of the Five Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) grants, which totals nearly $3.6 million being used for work throughout the State of Ohio. A portion of the grants are directed toward assisting Sandusky.
“As someone who lives in Huron, this is something that is important to me and many people within Erie County,” said Swearingen. “All of these grants will make such a positive impact not only for Lake Erie itself, but for all of the individuals and communities surrounding it, including Sandusky Bay.”
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is receiving a total of $285,000 that will be used to improve the wetland function in a coastal marsh and the Moxley Wetland Area in Sandusky Bay. In total, this allocation is going to restore 433 acres of coastal wetland and 1.4 miles of shoreline.
“With many citizens living around and visiting Lake Erie, this funding is certainly vital and I am pleased to see the EPA and the State of Ohio approve these grants to help continue to support the safety and health of anyone who utilizes an aspect of our great lake,” said Swearingen.
The remaining funds through the GLRI grants intend to provide necessary cleaning and address other areas of concern across Lake Erie.
