Reps. Rader, Cockley Testify on Bill to Protect Ohio's State Parks, Lake Erie from Oil and Gas Extractions
COLUMBUS — State Reps. Tristan Rader (D-Lakewood) and Christine Cockley (D-Columbus) today gave sponsor testimony on House Bill (HB) 399 before the House Natural Resources Committee.
HB 399 would prohibit any authority from issuing permits, entering leases, or granting authorization to extract oil or natural gas from beneath Lake Erie or any Ohio state park. With millions of Ohioans visiting these destinations each year, the legislation seeks to protect the state’s most cherished public lands and waters from the risks of oil and gas development, including fracking.
“Ohioans expect us to act as stewards of our environment and public lands, not just for today, but for the generations that will come after us,” said Rep. Rader. “This bill reaffirms that responsibility and ensures that our most iconic and sensitive public spaces are permanently protected from industrial exploitation.”
“This is a practical update to our laws that reflects the values of the people we represent,” said Rep. Cockley. “Every year, more Ohioans visit our parks to enjoy their natural beauty and the experiences they offer. Protecting these lands ensures that those experiences remain safe, sustainable, and available for future generations.”
Oil and gas leasing on public lands became legal in Ohio following a 2022 amendment to House Bill 507. Since that change, drilling and fracking activity has expanded to include areas near Salt Fork, Wolf Run, and Valley Run state parks.
HB 399 is currently under consideration in the House Natural Resources Committee.
