Reps. Jarrells, Cockley Introduce Celebrating Disabilities Month Bill to Recognize, Empower Ohioans with Disabilities
COLUMBUS — Assistant Minority Leader Dontavius L. Jarrells (D-Columbus) and State Rep. Christine Cockley (D-Columbus) Tuesday introduced the Celebrating Disabilities Month Act, legislation that would officially designate July as "Celebrating Disabilities Month" in Ohio. This bill honors the achievements, contributions, and resilience of Ohioans with disabilities while reaffirming the state’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
“Disability pride is about honoring the strength, resilience, and leadership of Ohioans with disabilities while celebrating the diverse experiences and talents that make our state stronger. These individuals are some of the hardest-working people in Ohio—teaching in our schools, innovating in industries, serving in our communities, and proving every day that ability is not defined by limitations, but by opportunity. Recognizing July as Disability Pride Month reaffirms our commitment to building a state where everyone belongs, where differences are embraced, and where all people can live with dignity and independence.” said Rep. Jarrells.
July marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark civil rights law that removed barriers and expanded access to education, employment, and public life. Yet, many Ohioans with disabilities still face challenges to full inclusion. Disability Pride Month will serve as both a celebration of progress and a reminder that our work is not yet finished.
“As a person with a disability, this legislation is incredibly important to me. By designating July as a time to celebrate people with disabilities, we are acknowledging the challenges of people living with a disability while celebrating their achievements and experiences. While there is still much work to be done, this legislation lays the foundation for a more inclusive Ohio,” said Rep. Cockley.
The Celebrating Disabilities Month Act is currently awaiting a House committee assignment.
