COLUMBUS - State Reps. Cecil Thomas (D- Cincinnati) and Munira Abdullahi (D-Columbus) Wednesday announced they have introduced a House Concurrent Resolution condemning President Donald Trump’s issuance of pardons and commutations for approximately 1.5K individuals convicted in connection with the January 6th insurrection on the U.S. Capitol, including those who committed violent acts against law enforcement officers.

“This pardoning sends a clear message: that extreme acts of violence against law enforcement will go unpunished,” said Rep. Thomas. “I urge the people of Ohio to pay close attention to the lawmakers who support this resolution, and those who stand for the violent attack on law enforcement officers who work every day to protect your homes, your state, your nation, and your freedoms.”

“The American people, particularly Ohioans, fully understand the gravity and threat posed by the January 6th insurrection to the foundation of our democracy and our daily lives. The significance of pardoning those who were emboldened to commit such violence is not lost on us. I urge everyone to reflect deeply on this event and consider the far-reaching impact it may have on our loved ones, our communities, and our nation as a whole. It is a difficult and brave task, but it is essential for the preservation of our values,” said Rep. Munira.

Rep. Thomas shares the concerns of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), both of which endorsed President Trump in his previous two campaigns. These organizations have spoken out against the pardons, stating, “When perpetrators of crimes, especially serious crimes, are not held fully accountable, it sends a dangerous message that the consequences of attacking law enforcement are not severe, potentially emboldening others to commit similar acts of violence.”
