COLUMBUS — State Rep. Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) today announced the signing of House Bill (HB) 359, the Joshua Alert Act, into law, marking a major step forward in protecting children with autism and other developmental disabilities across Ohio.

Named in honor of Joshua Al-Lateef Jr., the legislation creates a statewide alert system to help law enforcement quickly notify the public when a child with autism or another developmental disability goes missing and is believed to be in danger. Jointly sponsored by Reps. Cecil Thomas and Jennifer Gross (R-West Chester), the bill received overwhelming bipartisan support, passing unanimously in both the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate before being signed into law by Governor Mike DeWine.

"It's going to mean a lot, not only to families but to children with autism around the state,” said Rep. Thomas. “This is a win. Joshua's name will always be remembered as this law is passed."

Joshua's mother and founder of the Joshua Al-Lateef Jr. Foundation, Jonisa Cook, whose advocacy helped inspire and advance the legislation, celebrated the bill becoming law.

"It's a great day. It's a win for Ohio. Hopefully this bill will make sure kids like Joshua remain safe at all times," said Jonisa Cook.

The Joshua Alert Act is the result of a bipartisan effort among lawmakers, advocates, law enforcement, and Joshua's family to ensure Ohio has a faster and more coordinated response when vulnerable children go missing.

With the signing of this legislation, Joshua's legacy will live on through a law designed to save lives, support families, and help bring missing children home safely.
