Bill Establishing 10-day Waiting Period for Firearm Purchases Introduced by Reps. Baker, Thomas
COLUMBUS – State Reps. Rachel Baker (D-Cincinnati) and Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) this week introduced House Bill (HB) 309, which would create a 10-day waiting period when purchasing a firearm, as well as ensure that permits to carry firearms in public do not exempt purchasers from the 10-day window.
“We must protect the lives and wellbeing of our constituents and ensure they have a safe and secure future,” said Rep. Baker. “Requiring a waiting period to purchase a firearm is just one step towards addressing the serious threat of gun violence in our communities.”
“Establishing a 10-day waiting period is a commonsense way to prevent impulsive acts of gun violence,” said Rep. Thomas. “Ohioans have asked us repeatedly to do something. HB 309 is our opportunity to show them we’re listening.”
HB 309 now awaits further hearings in the House Government Oversight Committee.
